As part of the YMCA of Greater New York the Flushing YMCA is a community service organization that promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind and body, welcoming all people with a focus on youth. The Flushing YMCA is a branch of the YMCA of Greater New York, which was founded in 1852 as the second YMCA in the United States. In 1920, 30 YMCA members met to discuss how the organization could reach out to the 100,000 residents of Bayside, Douglaston, College Point, Flushing and Whitestone. The result was the establishment of the Flushing YMCA, which was built in 1925 and remains the cornerstone of the Flushing community. With 270 staff supported by 300 volunteers, the Flushing YMCA serves more than 15,000 young people between the ages of 1-17. In 2001 USD 115,000 in scholarships was provided in order to bring our services to youth and families regardless of their ability to pay. The facility boasts a diverse cultural composition, making the Flushing YMCA a welcoming center for the area. The Flushing YMCA has been serving the community for 77 years. Parents and elected officials look to the Flushing YMCA as an environment which enables children to experience and practice positive values?respect, responsibility, caring and honesty. George Williams and his friends founded the YMCA in London, England in 1844 to help young men like themselves find God and provide fellowship for men moving to big cities to find work during the industrial revolution. Today, the YMCA is nonsectarian and welcomes men and women of any faith, despite its historic name?the Young Men?s Christian Association. Millions of people have been introduced to sports at YMCAs. Basketball was invented by the YMCA as a winter sport by James Naismith in 1891. The game?s first professional team also came from the YMCA. Soon after, volleyball was invented at the YMCA?a blend of basketball, tennis and handball. Racquetball was also started at the YMCA, as was softball and professional football. Have you ever noticed that the YMCA logo includes a red triangle? The symbol was created more than 100 years ago by a YMCA instructor to represent the unity of spirit, mind and body?the philosophy of the YMCA. Members come to the YMCA not only to exercise, but to build relationships with family and friends. They volunteer to help others, especially children, who need care, guidance and recreation. The triangle symbolizes a philosophy that is as valid today as it was in the YMCA's earliest years. "" **Please be advised this is a hotel for the budget minded traveler.**
